A Photo Journey: A New Well Brings Hope

Since 2008, we have worked with community partners in 12 countries to bring safe water to communities that often self-identify as “forgotten”. Listening to and working with community leaders to bring their solutions to life is at the heart of what we do. While the work may differ from country to country, the goal remains the same – to bring holistic safe water, sanitation and hygiene solutions to communities for generations to come.

In Kaberamaido and Kalaki, Uganda, our work has evolved from distributing household water filters to fixing wells to drilling wells. Over the last few years, photographers from Photoserve have joined our team and worked alongside us to capture stories of both struggle and hope. One such moment is drilling a new well from start to finish.

By sharing this photo story, we hope to take you on a journey of how an entire community is transformed through the gift of safe water.

Communities are expected to pay a counterpart for each solution. In this case, the community contributed livestock and agricultural products to help fund the cost of the wall that surrounds the well.

Atim Grace has seven children, works on her family’s farm, and is a trusted representative for the local water committee. She’s also one of the main water collectors in her family. With an improved water source, she can now do the washing and cook more efficiently – including her favorite dish, pillau!
